Join us for a conversation between two talented Northwest poets—Tess Gallagher and Carlos Reyes—who will read from their recent collections and dialogue with the audience about the poetic process and their shared connection to Ireland.
Tess Gallagher, poet, essayist, novelist, and playwright, grew up in Port Angeles, WA. She received a BA and MA from the University of Washington, where she studied creative writing with Theodore Roethke, and an MFA from the University of Iowa.
Among her notable publications are: Dear Ghosts, 2006 (Poetry Finalist for 2007 Washington State Book Award); Midnight Lantern: New and Selected Poems, 2011; Is, Is Not a book of poems, 2019; and with her husband, Raymond Carver, the screenplays
Dostoevsky and King Dog.
Gallagher’s honors include a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation, two National Endowment
of the Arts Awards, the Maxine Cushing Gray Foundation Award, and the 1976 Elliston Award for her collection Instructions to the Double. She lives part-time in County Sligo, Ireland, and also in her hometown of Port Angeles, Washington.
Carlos Reyes, noted poet, translator, and world traveler, has published nine collections of poems, including Pomegranate, Sister of the Heart, and The Books of Shadows: New and Selected Poems, as well as many volumes of poems in translation and the memoir The Keys to the Cottage: Stories form the West of Ireland.
Reyes was a publisher and editor for 40 years at Trask House Books and a founding editor of Hubbub, a poetry magazine. When he is not traveling or at his three-hundred-year-old cottage in County Clare, Ireland, Reyes makes his home in Portland, Oregon.
