Description

June 19, 1865, marked the effective end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two and a half years earlier, the distraction of the Civil War and the remote location of Texas allowed it to escape any real enforcement against slavery. In fact, many Southern landowners moved there with their slaves. It was on this day in 1865, federal troops took control of Texas to ensure the freeing of its 250,000 enslaved people.
