The Philippines has had a special relationship with the United States since the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century.  However, since the election of Rodrigo Duterte, the country has pivoted more toward China, and away from the U.S. Duterte has also launched a large-scale war on drugs that many criticize for its brutality. What does the future hold for U.S, relations with the Philippines?

Great Decisions, produced by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), is America’s largest civic discussion program on world affairs. Discussions will run live online weekly each Thursday from April 2 – May 7. Each week we will cover a topic of great importance to Americans and a discussion of American policy will be facilitated along with viewing a short video. The Foreign Policy Association has made all the videos available free online. A link to the video is listed below for each discussion. We will be streaming the video via Zoom during the first half hour, for those who want to watch with the group. Attend the entire series of discussions or one discussion. No previous registration is required. The program series is co-sponsored by Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Adult Learning Program.
